It was a slow 'ring' (don't know the technical term) - not slow enough to be a toll - only two pitches / bells - but they went in and out of time / frame with each other over the course of a about a minute. I was kinda taken back by the sheer richness of the sound (it was like I'd never heard it before), the frequencies / microtones from the two bells overlapping in different ways -- like a slooow piece by S Reich or something... I don't know why they were ringing - what it represented - when I checked a clocked after they finished, it was 3:10 in the afternoon, so wasn't even calling the hour.
It was short, but weirdly hypnotic and accoustically very rich. An unexpected piece of Rural English Minimalism; an old and should-be-familiar sound suddenly made new.
