Reading it again, after all these years, it's a fun but frustrating read for me: all I can see are the problems with the story / script, the bits I fucked up / coulda done better / would do better if I did it now / etc. But - hey - you live and learn, right? Not long after doing the last Rose story, I fell ill with chronic ME for 4+ years and my life went into deep-freeze hibernation. Writing just wasn't possible. One of the problems with ME is cognitive dissonance as well as perpetual exhaustion, depression, blahblahblah. Water under the bridge.
Years later, it bugged me that I'd never written her quite as she deserved to be written. She was a minor character, but she was my (and Dylan's) minor character. So, in 2010, with permission from the Mighty Tharg, I wrote a prose Rose O'Rion story called "Unfinished Business" - for which Dylan kindly donated some beautiful spot illos - and which appeared in #10 of Zarjaz magazine. I fleshed the character out, rehabilitated her, made her more like what she shoulda / coulda been in the first place. Sure, I know it all sounds a bit precious, but I wanted to do right by the gal (as well as prove a point to myself too, probably).
There's a bit of me that wishes that Dyl and I owned the rights to Rose - a couple times I've been tempted to ask Rebellion what it would cost to buy the rights back off them (it was Work-for-Hire, see?), but then I kinda sober up and realise that there's no one out there who'd publish it, and no market for a slightly retro Space Thief, even if we did... and that there are a zillion new characters aching to be designed and brought to life...
