//(( ...was just watching the beginning of the 1970 ELP Live in Zurich footage: at the start there's a great bit of Emerson, er, organ abuse; sounds at points punkier'n Punk; shredded notes, voltage dancing in the air, shreiking circuits... somewhere I've got a DVD of Deep Purple in 71?, 72? - a similar scene: Jon Lord ripping the fuck out of a Hammond's innards, twisting wires, turning it into a noise-generator while the band lock into a Can-like groove - history kinda forgets these moments and walks in lockstep to Peel's revisionist view of ELP being the zenith of Prog Bloat. They certainly had their moments, but there's much delight in watching Keith pull sounds out of a Hammond that it was never meant to make; and the sheer look of exuberant delight on his face as his fingers skim across the keyboard - not an erg of energy wasted - grinning at his bandmates, at himself. They were in their pomp back then, their prime of life...))//
So sad to see them go, one at a time like this.
