Big fan of Darren's work, as many of you will be aware. This, another of his on-going drip-feed of unreleased material. Bonkers, as usual...
The toys that collect you.
Interesting. Mattel's profits are on the decline, yet they feel they can spare the cash to invest in - what? - algorithmic analysis of audio feeds from microphones on a toy? - surely that's a cash black-hole? Unless they were going to use third-party companies to do the data heavy-lifting... in which case, who, how, what? It's a story that merits more infrastructural investigation... have Mattel built their own infrastructure or using a pre-existing one?
Ah, wait: here we are: Toy Talk.
"Creepy Barbie can listen to everything your child says (and everyone else in the background) via a microphone. As the doll “listens” the audio is transferred to a web server where these juicy tidbits are processed so Barbie (or the creepsters at Mattel) can respond. Creepy NSA Barbie can record your child’s most intimate conversations, can hear everything going on in the background, and will be a third-party in all of your “what you thought were private” discussions.
When pressed, Mattel commented that they are ” committed to safety and security, and Hello Barbie conforms to applicable government standards.”
"...people outside China are being weaponised to target things the Chinese government does not like, for example, freedom of speech,” Anthr@x wrote in a blog post analysing the attack. In fact, the two pages targeted were the GitHub page of GreatFire, a well-known group that fights against Chinese censorship, and another page set by the group that hosts New York Times mirrors to allow Chinese netizens to access the paper’s site, which is normally blocked."
Teaser-taster for music-fiction split physical out in next week or so...

Today's shuffle-dance round the early-evening garden:
Languid, back-room stoner-blue Jyväskylän jams; 'slack' in (all) the best sense(s) of the word: muffled, woolly, warm-hearted, temporally-elastic, ever so slightly stoooned or two beers up, at least: Finnish legend Keijo and his pals from The Free Players, etc convene in front of the wood-burner and do their darnest to zone in on the spirit of white electric camp-fire blues, vampin' n a'jammin', free-associated lyrics mostly in English... it's like the best trance-blues pub band you never saw...
((Colder tonight, a stiff easterly breeze; fish-scale clouds, the sun letter-boxed 'tween horizon and cumulus. Neighbour's cat sat on the roof with its perpetually-baffled and slightly neurotic-looking expression, refusing to come down. The music expressed (by me) as a shaggy-topped lawn shuffle wi' a bit o'hip-sway. Don't need 'em replaced quite yet)).
((Fingernail moon on the rise)).
It's a great tape. Came out a while back, so sold through, I'm afraid. Sorry.
Finland, Finland... why are you so consistently great? I should be over you by now.
Rabbit Status: sniffy / mildly curious and unimpressed.
